Diaboléro

An intimate yet grandiose harmony
for inventive and fragile diabolo players

Diaboléro is a 60-minute circus and theatre show for indoor and outdoor venues, featuring eight of the world’s most talented diabolo artists performing with sensitivity and virtuosity to one of the world’s most famous pieces of French classical music: Ravel’s Boléro.

Beyond the technical prowess, this contemporary circus show explores the individual’s place within the collective and offers an insight into each artist’s unique world, revealing both their personal explorations and the questions that occupy their minds. Each artist delicately lifts the veil on their private lives, prompting reflection on themes such as the need for recognition, self-confidence, self-image, discrimination, integration, the fear of failure, the difficulties associated with hyperactivity, as well as the fear of ageing or getting hurt.

The show consists of two parts. The first, Introspection, introduces the artists, their connections, their innovative work with the diabolo, and their personal reflections. Voiceovers, ambient soundscapes and original music inspired by the Boléro enrich this immersive experience, illustrating and highlighting the unique world of each protagonist. The whole unfolds in an atmosphere that is at times serious but often tinged with humour, offering a nuanced perspective on the themes explored.

The second part, Orchestration, will feature a 17-minute diabolo group choreography set to Ravel’s Boléro.
Although the risk-taking is limited here, the aim is not a perfectly symmetrical and synchronised performance, but rather to allow the small imperfections and rough edges to shine through, as these are what lend it its authenticity and humanity, making it poignant and moving.

Esther Mollo’s direction, the original structure devised by Priam Pierret and Jean-Christophe Cheneval’s musical compositions lend this work a unique dramatic harmony.
